of America's Best Hospitals in 2006 and 2007 by
U.S.News & World Report, is a leading teaching hospital affiliated with two Ivy League medical schools:
Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
Our physicians serve as faculty members of these top medical schools. Residents will divide their time equally between the Emergency Department facilities at both NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The combined strengths of NewYork-Presbyterian's affiliate institutions allow us to offer a first-rate program to our residents.
The following highlight some of the unique features of the NewYork-Presbyterian's Emergency Medicine experience:
- We have an active trauma census, with one of the hightest trauma injury severity scores in New York City
- NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell serves as the receiving unit for the largest and busiest burn unit in the country, the William Randolph Hearst Burn Center
- Our residency program is augmented by pediatric trauma experience at the renowned Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian
- Our residents work closely with NewYork-Presbyterian EMS, the city's largest voluntary hospital ambulance service, which responds to over 50,000 "911" calls annually
Our affiliations with these facilities, combined with our mission as a community hospital treating New York City residents who live in our surrounding neighborhoods as well as patients from around the world, enables our residents to experience a wide diversity of cases.
Our Facilities
NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell are internationally renowned, quaternary care referral centers. Emergency Departments at both facilities are designated Level 1 Trauma Centers. They also serve as the community Emergency Departments for their two very diverse neighborhoods. In addition, both departments act as the initial triage and treatment area for all patients who are referred to the William Randolph Hearst Burn Center.
At
NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell
- There is a 27-bed Adult Emergency Department (ED) with an adjoining 10-bed Pediatric ED
- There are approximately 46,000 and 11,000 patients seen annually at the Adult and Pediatric EDs, respectively
- The Pediatric ED also sponsors a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship
At
NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia:
- We treat approximately 100,000 patients annually
- The Adult ED is a 44-bed unit that treats approximately 60,000 patients each year
- The Pediatric ED is a Level I Trauma Center that hosts a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship. It treats approximately 40,000 children annually in an 18-bed unit
Our EM physicians treat a remarkably diverse array of clinical diseases at both of these facilities. Our residents are routinely involved in the care of patients with unusual and rare problems and are assured of exposure to cases that will form the basis of the clinical practice.
Supervision
All Emergency Medicine residents are under the constant guidance of full-time, residency-trained and/or board certified Emergency Medicine faculty. All faculty members have appointments at either Weill Medical College of
Cornell University or Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. In addition,
- Residents will be given progressive levels of responsibility throughout their
training
- PGY 1 and 2 residents will function as primary caregivers
- PGY 3 residents will provide support for the junior residents and act as primary caretakers for critically ill patients
- PGY 4 residents will be responsible for the overall supervision of the clinical department, including patient
